This is the Graymont Shielded 4 Foot Biosafety Cabinet with a Labconco Laminar Biological Safety Hood A-2.

Acceptance Criteria:

The work surface of the hood will be bathed in a laminar airflow.
The user will be shielded by the equivalent of two inches of lead when standing in front of the body shield.
The bottom, back, and two sides will be shielded with the equivalent of two inches of lead.
All metallic surfaces will be coated to prevent corrosion.
The unit will be designed in such a way as to promote a safe working environment for the user.

Technical Specifications and Physical Properties (Refer to picture above):

The box dimension of the hood is approx. 54” wide, 37” deep, 90” high.
The vertical leg clearance of the unit is 25”
The work surface is 36” off of the facility floor.
The hoods are standard Labconco A2 Laminar flow hoods or other manufacturer specified by the customer.
The bottom, back and 2 sides of the chamber are shielded by 2” of lead.
The sliding body shield provides two-inch lead shielding and travels laterally across the hood.
The center of the lead glass viewing window is 54” off of the facility floor.
The viewing area of the body shield is 7.5” by 7.5”.
The lead glass window specifications are: 8” x 8” x 4” thick.
Density: 5.2 grams per cubic centimeter (1.6” Lead equivalency) Protected by 1/8” plate glass to front and back viewing surfaces.
The weight of the body shield is approximately 300 Lbs.
The overall boxed weight of the shielded hood is 8,000 Lbs.

Optional:

A provision for an ionization chamber can be made. This chamber should be shielded with a positron shield (2-3/8”, lead not included).
Lead shielding, and  chamber are flush with the floor of the hood. A lower shelf will support this subassembly.

This is a series of 4 retrofit installations at M. D. Anderson Cancer Clinic. The hoods were not shielded and could not be used for their intended applications. Graymont retrofit new tables and the proper shielding for their intended applications. Both of these hoods in this view had new tables with 2" shielding on both sides and the back. Each hood was also retrofit with a 2" sliding body shield and a 8" x 8" x 4" adjustable lead glass viewing window.
